I miss the days of the Altoids tin APRS for $30 and a couple AA batteries. Seems like everything is in the $100 range and you need to add a radio (and maybe a phone) to it.
Is anyone running a minimal setup? For instance, RaspberryPi with a USB soundmodem and a low-end Baofeng style radio? What about Arduino and sound over ADC? I know there's [an Arduino-ish build out there](http://www.mobilinkd.com/2014/09/11/arduino-kiss-tnc/) but I don't think there's one that lets me use the Arduino toolchain and IDE- which is a big part of why I want to do it.

The smallest working APRS node I had running was a rasberrypi, using direwolf, a usb soundcard, and a cable from the radio to the pi.

Looking forward to it. I'm thinking smaller with Arduino, but I could easily go the USB-soundcard-on-pi route for a base station. Looking forward to your blog post/forum post on it.
